Meet Andrew Yao of Decisive Insurance Agency in Richardson


Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Yao.

Andrew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My business partner, Dominic, and I met working at a State Farm agency about three years ago. We saw that we had a lot of synergy in working together and helped the agency achieve great success. We found that we weren’t serving our customers to the best of our abilities working at a captive agency (where only one company’s policies are sold).

We both had the vision of starting an independent agency to shop around multiple, high-quality carriers for our customers. That’s when we decided to join forces.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has and it hasn’t been smooth.

Starting out, there was no one offering two brand-new independent agency owners the opportunity to start their own business without goal requirements, years of experience and fair compensation.

We explored a couple of different avenues but ultimately realized we needed to purchase a book of business in order to get skin in the game. We were fortunate in finding a good deal and were able to incorporate Decisive relatively quickly. But, it was a lot of hard work — and waiting — to start our business and transfer customers over to our agency.

Please tell us about Decisive Insurance Agency.
Decisive is an independent insurance brokerage for property and casualty insurance (i.e. home, auto, business). We shop multiple A-rated and admitted carriers to find our customers the best deal on their coverage. Essentially, we streamline the insurance shopping process for you. When customers call us, they have access to a multitude of companies and what would take 10 hours for them to do on their own, we accomplish in half an hour (with no agency fees!) — it’s the best decision you can make for you and your family! We’re so thankful for our amazing customers for their loyalty and trust.

But what Dominic, my business partner, and I are most proud of and what sets us apart from other insurance brokerages is our commitment to giving other new business owners the opportunity to start their agency under our care and guidance. We have many agents who have joined the Decisive family as independent contractors and have achieved great success. We’ve cleared the way for them so that they don’t face the same challenges we did and so they can start their own businesses with minimal risks and barriers.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There’s nothing that I would have done differently. I feel blessed that things have worked out the way they have.

I see how there are many ways this business could have gone wrong for many others, just by chance. Our journey to where Decisive is now couldn’t have been accomplished without meeting the people who we met, being in the right places at the right times, and producing in the manner in which we have.
